Great Migration Safari FAQs
Planning to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration? Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Tanzania's most spectacular wildlife event.
What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?
The Great Wildebeest Migration is the world's largest land animal migration, involving more than two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles moving across the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania and Kenya's Maasai Mara in search of fresh grazing. It is considered one of Africa's greatest natural wonders.
When is the best time to see the Great Migration?
The migration takes place throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons. January to March is ideal for the calving season in Southern Serengeti, while July to October is famous for the dramatic Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti.
Can the migration be seen all year round?
Yes. The migration is a continuous cycle throughout the year. Although the herds move between different regions of the Serengeti ecosystem, there is always an opportunity to witness some stage of the migration depending on the season.
Are river crossings guaranteed?
No. River crossings are natural wildlife events and cannot be guaranteed. The herds decide when and where to cross based on instinct, weather conditions and grazing patterns. Our experienced guides maximize your chances by tracking herd movements daily.
Which safari is best for witnessing the migration?
The ideal safari depends on your travel dates. We recommend our 5-Day Great Migration Safari for the calving season, the 7-Day Serengeti Migration Safari for river crossings, and the 9-Day Northern Tanzania Migration Safari for a complete migration experience.
Which animals can I expect to see?
Besides millions of wildebeest and zebras, you can expect to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, countless antelope species, and hundreds of bird species. The Great Migration also offers excellent opportunities to spot the Big Five.
Can I combine the Great Migration with Zanzibar?
Absolutely. Many travellers combine a Great Migration safari with a relaxing beach holiday in Zanzibar. Lowen Safaris can arrange domestic flights, beach resorts and tailor-made safari and beach packages.
Are your Great Migration safaris private?
Yes. All Lowen Safaris are conducted as private safaris unless you specifically request a shared group departure. You'll travel in your own 4×4 safari vehicle with a professional English-speaking guide, allowing complete flexibility throughout your journey.
How far in advance should I book?
We recommend booking at least 6 to 12 months in advance if you plan to travel during the peak migration months (July to October). Luxury camps and lodges near the Mara River are often fully booked well ahead of time.
